How we can reduce food waste
Each year an estimated 1.3 billion tonnes of food gets wasted across the globe – roughly a third of what is produced and equating to 24% of all calories that is produced for human consumption, according to a report by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Resources Institute (WRI).
If you had to visualise how big 1.3bn tonnes of food is, picture a mountain that is 3.2 kilometres wide and 8,000 feet high – that is a staggering amount of food.
There are five main areas in the food value chain where food gets lost or wasted – learn more about this and about food waste in this visual guide from The Guardian.
